Voice
over Internet Protocol (VoIP), is a set of protocols used to carry voice
signals over the IP network (the Internet). This enables telephone calls
to be made using a Broadband Internet connection instead of a regular
(or analog) phone line.
There are a number of different styles of VoIP, some may only allow you
to call other people using the same service, however others, such as Redback's,
allow you to make calls to any telephone number - such as local, long
distance, mobile, and international numbers. VoIP can be set up in one of three ways.
Firstly by using what are termed "soft phones". In this case
you need specialized software installed on your computer, a microphone,
speakers, a sound card and a Broadband Internet connection.
Secondly, one can utilize a special VoIP phone, which plugs directly into
your Broadband connection and functions as a standard phone.
Finally a traditional phone can be used through an analog telephone
adaptor (ATA).
